Enrichment Programming

“I am walking away from here confident about who I am and that I won't ever lose that knowledge. What lesson could be more important to learn?

Session 1 - Summer Starts Early at Mizzentop

June 10 - June 28

Jump right into summer with fun and games! This recreational camp will feature cooking, Zumba, yoga, science, art, sports and of course, water-play. Each week will explore a different theme with related activities and projects.

Whether it's time to run and play, do a craft or make your own snack - each day is sure to be filled with fun! So put on your sunscreen and let's play!

Session 2 -Imagination Sprouts

July 8 - August 2

Children's imaginations will be stimulated through the use of movement including weekly Zumba and yoga classes, cooking, art, literature and science based activities. By exploring the natural world around them, children will delight in finding connections between the arts and sciences that surround them every day.

We might start the day looking at clouds, make a "cloud in a jar" and then make cloud cookies for snack! Whatever the topic, each day will combine plenty of outdoor time with focused, theme-based activities. Playing and learning joined together for happy summer days!

Session 3 - Let's Get Ready For School!

August 5 - August 16

Based on a true belief that learning is fun, this program will be a wonderful introduction to a school-like atmosphere for children new to pre-school or a natural bridge to the new school year for our returning students.

The final session of our camp program combines many elements of our earlier sessions. Kids will get ready for school with lively enrichment activities that will set the stage for a fabulous school year!

Math Counts

July 8 -July 12 (9:00am to 11:00am)

Mrs. Shultz's Math Counts (Grades 5-8) is a math program for students who love math. Those who love math fall under two types – those who love fast-paced problem-solving such as the Math Olympiad contests, and those who do not.  Math Counts will cater to both of those students, including hands-on problem-solving activities. Methods will include how to prove, how to solve, and how to communicate many math topics in a small group setting (see samples below).

The Magic of Stars and Squares

This activity is about the history and creation of a mathematical puzzle or recreation called magic squares.  Students will have the opportunity to use number sense and arithmetic facts to find missing numbers in a magic square and/or magic star.  Students will follow directions given in words and diagrams to create a magic square of odd order.  Students will also determine all possible combinations of 4 digits between 1 and 12 inclusive whose sum is 26 and then creating as many magic stars as they can using their list.

 Million Dollar Giveaway

Students will apply measurement skills to determine, in dollar bills, the capacity of a suitcase. The prize for winning a radio contest will provide the winner with up to $1,000,000 in cash. The catch is that the winner is only allowed one suitcase in which to carry away as much money as it will hold. Will this amount be more or less than the $1,000,000? Students will devise plans to determine an appropriate estimate for the amount of money it will take to fill a given suitcase.

Note: this is not an acceleration program, it is an enrichment program for the middle grades.
